On April 25, 2009, students in advertising and related studies at Chaminade University and Hawaii Pacific University competed in the District 13 finals for the annual National Student Advertising Competition. AAF-Hawaii is hopeful that the University of Hawaii, Honolulu Community College and BYU-Hawaii will be able to participate next year. This year’s judges were: Melissa Alpan, Associate Creative Director, Laird Christianson Advertising; Kim Randall, SVP and Managing Director, Communications Pacific; Faith Rex, President, SMS Consulting; Stephen Tabussi, VP Customer Solutions, First Insurance; & our guest writer, Jeff Zimmerman, Vice President, AdWalls. Special Mahalo to Gold Sponsors: Servco, Hawaii Malls, Design Asylum, and Electric Pencil/Zoombis/Jet Graphics for their support.
Submitted by Special Guest Writer, 2009 NSAC District 13 Judge, Jeff Zimmerman.
News flash for advertising agency owners! Honolulu has many talented “soon to be” creative directors and media planners; assuming you can wait for college graduation. This past weekend two highly talented groups of students in the advertising departments of HPU and Chaminade went head-to-head in the 2009 National Student Advertising Competition District 13 competition.
These college students showed off their stuff to qualify for a slot in the American Advertising Federation's annual conference National Finals on June 4th in Washington, D.C where they’ll be compete against 15 other schools. Over 100 universities and colleges participated this year’s competition.
The focus on the competition was to create an award winning and highly effective advertising campaign to fight binge drinking among college students. The sponsor of this year’s competition is the Century Council, a nonprofit organization funded by manufacturers of beer, wine and spirits seeking to combat drunk driving and binge drinking among this group.
The judges were challenged to choose a winner between 2 excellent campaigns presented by these groups in entertaining and memorable ways.
The first group to present was the HPU team who wowed the audience with a well-rehearsed and visually powerful spoken word, video and slide presentation. Their campaign entitled “Aftermath” utilized multiple advertising strategies and tactics that would roll out in hundreds of college campuses nationwide. Their ideas were innovative, non-traditional and visually powerful; in some cases, shocking. The point was to visually and emotionally anchor a very important and dangerous message about the risks of binge drinking. Through their research it was determined that 3 primary groups in colleges are most susceptible to the risks of binge drinking so their tactics were specifically targeted to: first year students, student athletes and those in the Greek system. They continued to drive home the concept of reality vs. the aftermath to repetitively remind these students that everything from death to violence to the not so sexy side effects of underage drinking were real and avoidable. The judges were highly impressed with their research and the creative thoughts applied to their strategies of communicating to this at-risk group. In addition to traditional media forms, they proposed a myriad of ideas to communicate their messages- way too many to list here but they were impressive.
The Chaminade team coined a new phrase “Will Power, Will You” to continually remind their target group that as responsible drinkers they have the ability to avoid the pit falls of this serious issue. Their campaign was broadly based using many well-tested, traditional media forms targeted to influence this group over and over on college campuses. This team also had a dynamic presentation using video and large format artwork to show how their campaign would use graphics, tee shirt designs and promotional products to be in the face of their well researched group of college students at highest risk. They correctly determined their audience was divided into committed, persuadable and moderate drinkers. From this research the Chaminade team determined the best tactics to custom tailor messages to a differing but similar group of students. Many of their ideas both tactically and creatively were unique and thought provoking.
In the end it was clearly a great experience for both schools with enthusiasm and high drama giving way to two team efforts where fun and team work were obviously the guiding principles. Even though the competition was fierce, the judges determined the HPU team was the winner this year. Congratulations to both teams for a job well done and hopefully this sets the bar even higher for next year’s student advertising competition.
